Fifteen
Outside, the rain was heavier than before and the evening seemed impossibly dark. Posie shivered as they sheltered under the huge stone portico, but she refused the Inspectorâs jacket as he began to shrug it off for her. She was still angry about Dawney and his comment about the few extra pounds. And for the fight with her brother.
Lovelace lit a cigarette.
âWhat did you make of all that?â he asked, inhaling deeply.
Posie frowned, tamping down her anger, trying to rise above it. âWell, sir, we have some new information, donât we? That Amyas was distancing himself from the Roades, and from pretty much everything since January. There was even some mention of a divorce. Did you hear that? Seems like he was starting over, as much as he could, with Olga and the prospect of their child.â
âDo you think the doctor was bluffing when he said heâd never met Olga? He didnât seem to know about the child, either, did he?â
âIf he did know then heâs a very good actor as well as one of the best surgeons in the country. I think what it shows is that Amyas kept secrets from everyone, Bill Sawbones included. Especially with regard to the child. I wonder why this child â Katia â was so special to him?â
âI donât know. Would you consider Doctor Dawney a suspect? He was on that list from the biscuit tinâ¦â
Posie chewed at her thumbnail, trying to put her personal dislike aside, to remain impartial. âWell, heâs obviously awfully clever. I wouldnât think that putting four hundred geographical miles between Dr Dawney and a man he wanted to murder would be much of an obstacle; he would find a way somehow. But the crucial thing is, I canât see why he would want to kill Amyas. What would he gain?â
Lovelace shuffled in the cold air. âDo you fancy grabbing a bite to eat? Just some bread and cheese and a glass of wine at Gordonâs on the Embankment? The hired nanny for Phyllis, Ella Brown, has moved into the downstairs bedroom permanently, so I donât need to rush home to Clapham anymore if Iâm busy. It would be good to chat?â
âIâm so sorry, sir, but I need to pack for my holidayâ¦â
Actually, she just needed to walk in the rain and to clear her head and to think. To be alone.
The Inspector smiled mock-cheerfully. âI understand. Iâll see you tomorrow then, Posie, for an eight oâclock briefing in my office with you and the lads on the case. Youâll be off on your holidays straight afterwards, eh? Remind me again why you chose Whitley Bay? Apart from wanting to see the lovely Inspector Oats every day, that is.â
And when Posie muttered something about having seen it advertised in a fashion magazine, like Inspector Oatsâ wife, it sounded unconvincing, even to her own ears. She watched Lovelaceâs face, the disbelief flashing over it.
How could she tell him that Whitley Bay had not been her choice?
And then Lovelace simply shrugged and waved, and Posie felt wretched.
